White collar workers are increasingly earning more than 10,000 yuan ($1,452) each month in Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone.
In recent years, thanks to favorable policies, the development zone, also called Optical Valley of China (OVC), has attracted lots of professional talent and capital.
A total of 31,000 people in the development zone earn more than 120,000 yuan a year, according to data from the local government.
About 20,000 people in OVC now earn an annual salary of 120,000 yuan to 200,000 yuan. Another 9,000 people earn 200,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan every year.
In terms of industries, those who work in the sectors of finance, scientific research, and real estate earn the highest salaries.
Salaries appear to have benefited from regional economic development. In recent years, many high-tech companies came to do business in OVC. In January 2017, construction work started on Wuhan’s biggest individual investment project –– a national storage base. In April, China Star Optoelectronics Technology signed a contract with the development zone, investing 35 billion yuan to build a flexible display panel production line in OVC.
College students are attracted by the companies and high salaries on offer in the area and continue to flock to the development zone.
