On December 30, 2016, the construction for the National Memory Base Project began in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone.

The project is located at Wuhan Future City and occupies an area of 1,968 acres. It will serve mainly as a manufacturing hub for memory chips.

A total of USD 24 billion will be invested into this project. Funds of USD 8 billion for the first phase of the project has already been put in place. The first phase is expected to be completed in 2018.

By 2020, the whole project will be finished, with a monthly production capacity of around 300,000 chips, and an annual estimated output exceeding USD 10 billion. The project will also bolster development in related industries, such as the design, application, and packaging industries.

The memory chip represents the epitome of advanced manufacturing technology and scale economy characteristics of the integrated circuit industry. With the development of big data and cloud computing, memory chips have taken over a 25% share of the chip market. It is predicted that the memory chips will achieve a 45% share of the chip market in five years.
