Wuhan eyes inland China's largest international port city

Editor's note: on July 22, Wuhan government issued the city's first comprehensive and systematic white paper on construction of shipping center on the middle reaches of Yangtze River. According to the official workpaper, Wuhan Shipping Center will be completed during China's Thirteenth Five-Year Plan period. And by 2030, Wuhan will be built into the largest international port city in China's inland.
Great importance of Wuhan Shipping Center
Yangtze River is the first golden waterway in inland rivers around the world in terms of freight volume. It plays an important strategic role in the overall pattern of China's regional development.

Hubei boasts the longest artery of Yangtze River in China, which locates at the middle reaches of this golden waterway as a connecting link.

With the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiatives and Yangtze River Economic Belt, Wuhan Shipping Center is becoming increasingly prominent as a strategic fulcrum of promoting the construction of the economic belt, an important hub of building the comprehensive transportation corridor along the Yangtze River, a new engine to drive the development of city cluster along the middle reaches of Yangtze River, and a booster to construct Wuhan into a key metropolis of China.

Rapidly developing Wuhan Shipping Center
1. Transport capacity and infrastructure investments grow in double digits
During China's 12th Five-Year Plan period, the infrastructure investment of Wuhan Shipping Center grew to 15.3 billion yuan from 5.685 billion yuan, an increase of 1.7 times;
The throughout capacity of container terminals was up 1.3 times;
The ro-ro transport capacity in the automobile industry rose threefold.

2. Wuhan Yangluo Port turns into the largest port along the upper and middle Yangtze River
The container throughput rose to 1.06 million TEUs, basically achieved a doubling number in growth rate. The ro-ro transport capacity in the automobile industry rose 1.3 times.

3. Navigation capacity sees rapid expansion
The navigation capacity for Wuhan New Port saw a rapid expansion, having launched eight domestic and international routes, including three near-sea shipping lines to seven countris and three regions.

4. Modern shipping service debuts
The first EDI (electronic data interchange) platform in the middle reaches of Yangtze River was launched in Wuhan, realizing the construction of modern shipping center from scratch. The platfrom provides integrated service in shipping finance and goods trading.
Wuhan Shipping Exchange opened;
Yangluo Port becomes the first departure port to pilot tax rebate among China's inland rivers.

5. Port industry speeds up construction
As an important platform of attracting business and investment, Wuhan New Port has attracted hundred-billion investment to support the development of industries as automobile, petrochemistry, ship building and logistics.

Development planning of Wuhan Shipping Center
In accordance with the overall requirement of the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan, Wuhan Shipping Center will implement "2411" Project, including two hubs, four functional platforms, one participants cluster of shipping market and a batch of port demonstration zones.
1. Focus on building container hub ports cluster of Yangtze River, with Yangluo Port as the core and Huashan Port, Jinkou Port and Hannan Port as supports.
2. Build a main ro-ro transport hub for automobiles and functional platform for shipping service in Yangtze River Basin, giving prominence to the key points of Jinkou Port and Junshan Port, giving an effective role to Hannan Port and Zhuankou Port.
