The State Council, China's cabinet, approved the 13th five-year guideline on boosting the rise of central region on December 26, 2016.

The guideline indicates that China will support Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, and Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, to build the "national central city," after Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Chengdu.

Wuhan is repeatedly highlighted in the guideline - actively promote innovation and reform in Hubei (Wuhan), accelerate the construction of national independent innovative demonstration zone of Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone, develop the optoelectronic industry with Wuhan and Nanchang as the pivot, set up the flat panel industrial chain taking Hefei Wuhu and Wuhan as the center, support Wuhan and Hefei to build into the bases of memory industry, promote Wuhan and Yichang to construct the national e-commerce pilot cities, etc.

The six provinces in central China - Henan, Shanxi, Hubei, Anhui, Hunan and Jiangxi - have rich land and agriculture resources. The region contributes 20.3 percent of China's total GDP, up from 18.8 percent in 2005.  (hubei.gov.cn by Ruan Xinqi)
