The second International Biology and Health Industry Expo (IBHIE) opened in China’s Optics Valley on June 30 in Wuhan, Hubei province.
Five biopharmaceutical industrial parks have signed an agreement to build a bio-industry federation along the Yangtze River Economic Zone.
The five biopharmaceutical industrial parks are from Wuhan, Shanghai, Taizhou, Hangzhou and Chongqing.
The five parties will speed up the building of a research and development platform and an innovation center. Meanwhile, they will share resources and key technologies with others.
"Wuhan plays a leading role in building the innovation system for medical science,” said Li Qing, director of the research center for the development of pharmaceutical and health sciences of the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC).
"In recent years, Wuhan has made obvious advances in developing advanced technologies, including in genetic engineering, new generation vaccines, cell therapies and digital imaging,” Li said.
"Wuhan has provided valuable experiences for the development of medical sciences as well as the bio-health industry,” Li added.
Over the past five years, the total output of Hubei’s bio-health industry reached 200 billion yuan ($29.4 billion), led by Wuhan National Bioindustry Base (WNBB).
The WNBB has been approved by the central government to become a national demonstration center for genetic testing technology. Meanwhile, Hubei is among the first batch of pilot provinces for the concentrated development of national strategic emerging industries.
"Hubei will grasp opportunities and continue to develop new technologies for the bio-health industry,” said Guo Shenglian, vice-governor of Hubei province.
"We will make great efforts to build WNBB into a world famous biotechnological innovation center,” he said.
The bio-health expo which has a theme of “innovation, life and health” was hosted by Wuhan municipal government and supported by NHFPC.
Nearly 1,000 participants, including officials, doctors and businesspeople attended the event.
