Jackson Laboratory (JAX), the U.S.-based world's largest genetic engineering research center, in conjunction with Wuhan Frasergen Bioinformatics Co. Ltd., announced the creation of a cancer genomics facility in the Optical Valley, Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei province on June 7.

This is the first time JAX sets a facility overseas. The facility to be established will enable researchers in Wuhan to investigate cancers and their response to novel drugs and immunotherapies using JAX’s innovative cancer tools according to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) announced in Wuhan.

According to the agreement, Frasergen will invest one billion yuan (USD 160.1 million) to introduce the most advanced biomedical team and technology to China. The Jackson Laboratory-Frasergen collaboration in China will form a business cluster that mainly serves life medicine, fundamental research on pharmacy and industrial development, provide outsourcing services in personalized medicine in cancer and hereditary disease condition and drug discovery, offer rapid and quality genomic medical service to China and the world. Its sales revenue is estimated to reach six billion yuan (USD 960.6 million) within five years.

According to Dr. Deng Zixin, President of Wuhan Institute of Biotechnology and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, all research has to be experimented on animals before applied to humans. JAX breeds and manages colonies of mice to supply over 80 percent top-level medical research in the world.

The Jackson Laboratory, founded in 1929, is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a facility in Sacramento, Calif., and a new genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Conn. It employs a total staff of more than 1,500. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.(hubei.gov.cn)
