Shanghai General Motors will set up its fourth production base in Wuhan, capital city of central China's Hubei Province. An agreement was signed between Shanghai GM and Wuhan Municipal Government on March, 28.
Located in Jinkou town of Jiangxia District in Wuhan, the project will bring the town into a "motor town", local newspaper said.
With a total investment of 7 billion Yuan (US$1.11 billion), the production base will be built in two phrases, each with an annual output capacity of 300,000 automobiles.
In addition, supporting facilities of engines and auto parts production as well as a logistics park will be built.
The first phase of the project will start construction at the end of June and put into operation in 2014. The total investment of the first phase will exceed 140 million Yuan (US$22.2 million). The number of auto parts enterprises followed up had reached 24 with more than 6 billion of scale investment and more while investment in logistics related project had reached 800 million. Besides, Jinkou will build a new port as logistic networks to connect transportation of land, railway and waterway.
The target value of Wuhan automobile industry will reach 400 billion Yuan (US$63.5 billion) by the year 2016 and the project will add great significance to the goal.
General Motor planned to achieve the annual sales volume of 2 million in 2015, which means there is still space for capacity improvement.
"The first phase of the project is just a beginning." a relevant official said. In 2015, the second phase of the project will be under construction, aiming at more than 100 auto parts enterprises with output value of over 200 billion Yuan (US$31.7 billion).
This is the forth production base of General Motor after Shanghai, Yantai and Shenyang.
