Updated: 2017-08-24

Donghu High-Tech Development Zong (Optics Valley) in Wuhan, Hubei province has appealed to a large number of overseas returnees in recent years.

Optics Valley has invested 1.3 billion yuan ($ 195.06 million) in special funds and projects to attract international specialists to work or start businesses here, including the national "1000 Talent Plan", "Wuhan City Partners" and the zone's "3551 program".

Among 116 "Wuhan City Partners" in 2016, more than half are overseas returnees. Nearly 70 percent of the "3551 program" recruits have worked or have been educated abroad.

Yan Dapeng, an expert who returned from the United States and joined in the national "1000 Talent Plan", together with his team, developed the first myriawatt fiber laser in the country, making China the second country with this technology in the world, after the United States.

More high-level specialists who returned from overseas are making Optics Valley and Wuhan an innovation and entrepreneurship center of global influence.

Wuhan, together with Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou, attracted nearly half of overseas returnees, according to a recent survey on employment and entrepreneurship among returned overseas Chinese in 2017.

In 2016, more than 540,000 Chinese studied abroad, and 432,500 of them returned home.

Nearly 90 percent of overseas returnees find employment within half a year, with information technology, communications, electronics, and internet industries being the most popular sectors.
