Optics Valley plays vital role in optoelectronics sector

Updated: 2017-08-28

Donghu High-Tech Development Zone (Optics Valley) in Wuhan, Hubei province was recently praised by the National Development and Reform Commission for its significant contribution to the development of the optoelectronics sector.

In 2016, gross revenues for optoelectronics sector reached 500.2 billion yuan, up 13 percent compared to 2015 and six times as much as in 2009. More than 110 optoelectronics information companies surpassed 100 million yuan in their yearly production value.

Optoelectronics are the fastest growing sector in Optics Valley, including industries of optical communication, laser, integrated circuit, semiconductor display and Internet Plus.

Optics Valley has become the largest production base of optical fibres, cables, and optical devices, and the largest research base for optical communication technology.
Standing at the forefront of the country’s laser industry, Optics Valley is one of the country’s three research and production bases for laser products.

Around 200 companies in the zone make laser products including fiber lasers, ultraviolet lasers, high-powered lasers, laser welding equipment, and laser medical equipment.

The 24-billion-dollar national memory base project began construction in the zone on Dec 30, 2016, marking the start of a new era in the development of the integrated circuit sector in Optics Valley.

A semiconductor display industrial cluster has also developed rapidly in Optics Valley.

Projects such as China's first 6th-generation flexible LTPS-AMOLED display panel production line worth 35 billion yuan are building the zone into a research and production base for small and medium-sized display panels.

The Internet Plus industry is also enjoying rapid growth. New sectors including online live streaming, artificial intelligence, e-commerce, and smart healthcare have flourished in Optics Valley.
