Foreign expert has successful startup in Optics Valley

"Dad and mom, happy Chinese New Year," said Tomas in Wuhan to his parents in Brazil on Feb 17, the second day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Tomas, technical director of Wuhan Hongshi Technologies, a company that focuses on iris recognition technology based at Future City in East Lake High-tech Development Zone (Optics Valley of China) in Wuhan, Hubei province, was spending his fourth Chinese New Year since he came to the country in 2014.

"My parents have learned quite a lot about the Chinese New Year culture from me," Tomas said, "I used to join a family party of a colleague, it was very warm and sweet."

Last year, company staff members often worked overtime, and so for Spring Festival Tomas wanted them to relax and spend more time with their families, so he chose to be on duty while they returned to their hometowns.

On Tomas' desk, there were three flags. "The flags of Brazil and China, and the banner of the company, all have extraordinary significance for me," said Tomas.

Tomas started a business in Brazil before going to Germany for further studies. In 2011, while attending an artificial intelligence forum in Italy, he met the Chinese chip expert Yi Kaijun.

At that time, Yi was preparing to go back to Wuhan to start a high-tech enterprise engaged in research and development of iris recognition products.

In January 2014, Tomas got his doctorate and came to China to start a business with Yi.

When heard that Tomas was about to start a business in China, many of his relatives and friends were opposed, and some even said that it would be impossible for him to succeed.

"Actually we have succeeded," Tomas said. After several years of hard work, the "iris lock" developed by the company has achieved great recognition.

Tomas was also chosen a member of the Optics Valley "3551" talent program.

"China's development trends, vast market and entrepreneurial policies are too attractive to me, and in the future, Hongshi Technologies will meet more challenges, as well as make greater achievements," said Tomas.
