Dameng sets example for domestic database companies

China Eastern Airlines has begun to use the domestic e-ticket system provided by Optics Valley’s Dameng (DM) Database Co Ltd, replacing previous databases built by the international giant Oracle.

DM was formerly a database and multimedia research institution of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and began commercial operation in 2000. Now, it is competing with IBM and Oracle for over 30 military and civil industrial sectors including railway, finance, public security, electricity, social insurance, auditing, land resources, e-government and emergency rescue.

Foreign database giants such as Oracle and IBM still currently dominate China’s database market. Most governments are accustomed to using foreign products with a single procurement channel, so many homemade databases are directly rejected.
However, an increasing number of industries require the use of domestic products for information development in order to ensure information safety, giving domestic database companies a new opportunity.

Feng Yucai, chairman of DM database, said, “The national feeling is not enough to support domestic products, but the business strength of the domestic software companies themselves has a unique opportunity for development.”

China TravelSky Holding Company has used US-made software systems for 30 years. Before it officially launched the new civil aviation e-ticket system provided by DM, it compiled a test to ensure the database could still satisfy its business requirements when facing ten times the amount of Air China’s normal business. As a result, the current ticket trading systems of Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines all use DM database products.

Feng Yucai also claimed that as big data-based smart power grids start to replace traditional power grids, better, safer and more efficient databases are absolutely necessary. Notably, 80 percent of data systems within the State Grid Corporation of China are using DM products.

In key industries such as aerospace, national defense and electricity, domestic database companies should grasp the opportunity to provide better service, stability and lower costs to compete with international brands.
