East Lake High-Tech Development Zone (Optics Valley of China) in Wuhan, Hubei province ranked third in a recently-released list of top 50 national high-tech zones for competitiveness of biomedicine industries in 2016, following Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park and Shanghai's Zhangjiang High-tech Park.
The biomedicine industry in the country has seen rapid growth in recent years, with output value in 2016 reaching 3.8 trillion yuan ($578.54 billion), accounting for 5 percent of GDP, and the figure is expected to hit 15 percent in 2030.
Seeing that the biomedicine industry would likely enjoy rapid future growth, the zone started construction of Biolake, a bio-industry base, on Nov 18, 2008, and since then, revenues of the biological health industry in the zone have maintained an annual growth rate of nearly 30 percent.
In 2016, Optics Valley’s biological health industry achieved revenues of 100 billion yuan. More than 1,100 biomedical companies in the zone have formed an industry cluster featuring biomedicine, biomedical engineering, biological agriculture and biological services.
Based on Biolake, Optics Valley of China aims to build itself into a base for the bio-economy and industrial innovation, and build its biomedicine industry into an industry worth a trillion yuan.
