The T3 terminal of Tianhe International Airport started construction in July 26, 2012, local authorities said. When finished in 2015, Wuhan will become the largest aviation hub in central China and ranked the fourth largest aviation city nationwide.
In the first half of 2012, civil aviation industry of Hubei Province in central China experiences significant uprise although the industry as a whole is going through a slowdown. Wuhan airports have a passenger throughput of 6.69 million as well as goods throughput of 61,500 tons and flight throughput of 63,200, which is 10.9 percent, 8.8 percent and 12.8 percent higher than the same period last year respectively. With growth rate outnumbers average industry index, Hubei achieves excellent scores in civil aviation development.
At the same time, international and domestic airlines in Wuhan Tianhe International Airport rise rapidly with destinations to Paris, Singapore, Osaka, Kaohsiung, Penghu, Hualien and Shizuoka within the first six months in 2012. Due to a year-on-year growth of 37.2 percent on passenger flow volume, the annual volume is expected to be more than 500,000.
"As Wuhan boasts vast rivers and undergoes rapid development, a small airport will not match," said Li Jiaxiang, an expert who is very optimistic about Wuhan's advantage in geo-location. According to him, Wuhan is more than just a transportation thoroughfare, but it will also link the whole world by air.
Besides, regional airports in Hubei enjoy cultural backgrounds, which is of great beneficial to its development. "Compare with Zhangjiajie Airport in Hunan and Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport in Sichuan, Shennongjia has unparallel advantages in natural scene and culture essences," Li Jiaxiang said. “Let Shennong go into the sky," he added.
Precious opportunities brought by the stretching of civil aviation development are also seized by some express delivery giants who had establish a collecting and distributing center in Wuhan in 2011. A new project of supporting distribution center is on the map as extended construction of T3 terminal of Tianhe International Airport breaks ground.(hubei.gov.cn)
