When it comes to auto industry, Hubei is home to not only big names such as Dongfeng Motor Company Limited (DFL), Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile Company LTD (DPCA) and General Motors (GM), but also the manufacturing of special-purpose vehicles (SPVs). As is unveiled at the “2012 International Forum on the China Special-Purpose Vehicle Industry Development” held in Wuhan, the SPV industrial scale in Hubei ranked the third in China, with SPVs made in Hubei taking a share of 10% in the total output.
At present, Hubei is home to over 90 out of the 800-odd SPV manufacturers on national notice, following Shandong and Jiangsu Province. Cities in Hubei also earned national titles, with Suizhou honored as the “City of SPVs” and Shiyan as the “City of Trucks”. In 2011, an estimated 125,000 SPVs were manufactured in Hubei, some of which were sold to Europe, U.S. and Asia.
The city of Xiangyang saw the second-phase project of Hubei Foton Special Vehicle Co., Ltd. Which kicked off in March and the foundation-laying ceremony for DFL’s SPV base with a expected annual output of 20,000 SPVs was held in April.
Dedicated to the creation of a 200,000-square-kilometer “city for cars”, the Hanna District in Wuhan, capital of Hubei, is also intended to introduce SPV & auto part enterprises by hosting the 2012 Forum.
SPV is defined as specially-adapted vehicles or ones equipped with special devices aiming for specific transport services (of cargo or man) or particular work, including dump trucks, tank cars, vans, sanitation trucks, highway trucks, ambulances, emergency vehicles for electricity and communication, etc.
